Having just been founded in 2015, Atletico Brisbane are one of the youngest participating clubs in the Escape Travel AFA Cup. They will be represented in both the mens and womens competitions. We took the opportunity to speak with Amanda Wenzel about both teams.

Wenzel said: “It was certainly exciting and an honour to be invited to an amazing tournament like this! AFA work tirelessly to host brilliant tournaments worldwide, so to have one on our home turf is even more exciting.

“Atletico Brisbane have been training hard consistently over this season, preparing for this tournament and the Pearl River Delta Cup, which they were successful in winning and have the honour of been the 2017 champions. So, they are looking forward to the challenge of playing some of the best teams in the country.

When asked about preparation so far, Wenzel commented: “Our men’s team is a very young team – average age is 19 years with only 3 players above this age therefore competing against older, experienced and physically stronger teams will only make the men step up and work hard as a team. I think they will grow as a team by playing at a high level and against different styles of players and coaching.

“Our women’s team is a great team who have played together for a couple of years now. Over the past couple of years, they have had mixed results. This will be a good test to see how far they have come under the guidance of the Coach George Sukker.

“George has only taken over the women’s team this year. I am confident the girls will be very competitive as they have been training hard this season.”

The Atletico Brisbane squads competing in the tournament are as follows:

Men: Samuel Godbold, Samuel Lowrie, Ryan Jones, Joshua Moore, Andres Pascoe, Jai Bell, Ashley Clark, Matthew Schmidt, Joshua Buxton, Jay Broughton, Alexander Sandhu, Joshua Manwaring.

Women: Keely Richards, Georgia Appelhof, Jessica Hogg, Jaz Kent, Daisy Welsh, Rose Nisbet, Kara Mowbury, Tiarne Petterwood, Sarah Nisbet, Tahlia Carney.
