Atletico Brisbane took on Islanders Futsal in day three of the Escape Travel AFA Cup. The match was a must win for both sides, and goals were required to give them the best chance of advancing to the final. The match rained goals from the first whistle, with Brisbane always in the ascendency, but Islanders staying within touching distance. Eventually Brisbane saw the match out to win by a 10-5 scoreline which was harsh on their opposition.

Brisbane dominated the early stages, with number nine Joshua Buxton having an early shot on goal, however he couldn’t reach the target. Minutes later Atletico’s number ten Jay Broughton scored, placing the ball confidently past Islanders’ goalkeeper.

Atletico’s Broughton scored another great goal putting Brisbane two up, by pulling off a cheeky nutmeg. With less than ten minutes on the clock Brisbane were not showing any let up.

Atletico’s number seven Ryan Jones scored an impressive goal, making the score at 3-0. The Brisbane side had complete control of the game by this stage.

Frustration was creeping into the Tasmanian side’s play however they fought back with Zac Cross firing past Brisbane’s keeper, Alex Sandhu. Not long after, Islanders scored again with an impressive play between Aaron Marney and Jarrod Linger resulting in the latter finding the net.

Brisbane came straight back with number two Samuel Lowrie placing a firm shot from a free kick past the Islanders’ keeper.

The match raged from end to end and the Tasmanian side came firing back with number nine Adam Woodward scoring, leaving the score 4-3 to Brisbane.

With two minutes on the clock, yesterday’s hat trick hero Carlos Moore scored another well taken goal for the Brisbane side from a penalty due to the Islanders committing their sixth foul.

Half Time: Atletico Brisbane 5-3 Islanders Futsal.

Atletico’s Broughton completed his hat-trick early in the second half. Brisbane’s Lowrie was also on fire in the second half, bagging himself a second goal. The goal came from an impressive shot from just outside the penalty area, placing the ball with power past Islanders’ keeper Bardia Solati.

Islanders’ Woodard scored a great goal past Brisbane’s keeper Sandhu, adding one more goal to their tally. With ten minutes on the clock, Atletico’s hat trick scorer Jay Broughton had received a straight red card after taking out Islanders’ attacker, meaning Broughton will sit out of the grand final provided his team progresses.

Tasmania’s number seven Mackenzie Hancox scored to give Islander’s another goal. By this stage the Tasmanian side seemed to have grown in confidence, whereas Brisbane seemed to be giving away needless fouls. Atletico’s keeper Samuel Godbold showed a cool head, even throwing in a cartwheel for show.

Atletico’s Jones scored another goal, increasing their lead to 8-5. Seconds later an exceptional move saw Brisbane’s Carlos Moore, Jai Bell and Joshua Buxton combine, resulting in Moore scoring a deserved goal.

With five minutes to go, Islanders went into fifth man, desperate to score another goal. Brisbane’s Godbold put his goalkeeping skills on display when making two outstanding saves late in the second half. With under a minute left on the clock, good link up play from Buxton and Lowrie saw the latter score to take Brisbane’s tally to double figures.

The win gives Brisbane another three points, giving them a good chance at making finals depending on how Newcastle Titles fare against Ballarat FC this afternoon. The loss leaves Islanders fighting for third place.
