Eagles grind out victory against resolute Islanders

Eastcoast Eagles took on Islanders Futsal in the opening match of the Escape Travel AFA Cup’s third day of action. Whilst the match was effectively a dead rubber, with Eagles guaranteed a spot in the final and Islanders unable to finish above third, it certainly wasn’t treated like that by either team. Islanders led twice, giving their opponents an almighty scare, before Eagles eventually ran out 4-2 winners.

The match started off cautiously, with both teams fighting for possession. Islanders’ number seven Bethany Bygrave scored the first goal of the match, putting her side one up with a low shot to the keeper’s right.
Eastcoast came back straight from the kick off, with number six Sophi Jones having an excellent shot on target, however she couldn’t make it past Islanders’ impressive keeper, Deborah Lawrence, on this occasion.

With just over ten minutes left in the first half, Eagles’ Jessica Hayes scored to even the scoreline. Eastcoast were determined to add more to the score board, however Islanders’ goalkeeper Lawrence was in inspired form, letting nothing get past her. Bygrave added a second goal to her tally for the Tasmanian side just seconds before half time, giving Tasmania a surprising but deserved lead.

Going into half time possession was nearly level, with Eagles having 51% of the ball, and Islanders having 49%. All was to play for in the second half.

Half Time:
Eastcoast Eagles 1-2 Islanders Futsal.

Going into the second half Eastcoast dominated from kick off, with an early goal from number four Keea Parish assisted by number six Sophi Jones. Not long after Eagles’ first goal of the half, Parish came out again to score a second goal, leaving the New South Wales side a goal to the good on the scoreboard.

Eastcoast’s Shannon Day was next to score after making a run through the middle and hitting a well placed shot on goal. Eagles’ were dominating the Tasmanian side by this point with 35 shots, 18 of which were on target. However, Lawrence was equal to everything thrown at her and kept the score at 4-2.

As full time approached the intensity stepped up and the game became faster. Tasmania tried having a few late efforts on goal but they couldn’t get past the ever reliable Eastcoast goalkeeper, Britt Hargreaves.

The victory for Eagles’ guarantees them top spot and a place in the final. The loss for Islanders’ means they need to play off for third and fourth place in tomorrow’s match.
