Eagles fly to top of table leaving Brisbane to battle for second

Atletico Brisbane took on Eastcoast Eagles in their second match of the tournament. With both teams winning their games yesterday, it was set to be an intriguing match. Eastcoast edged a tight first half, going 2-0 ahead. Brisbane fought back and nearly found an equaliser, but a late goal from Eagles sealed a 3-1 victory and progression to the final.

The first half was a slow and cagey affair in Queensland’s heat, but Eastcoast allowed Brisbane very little possession.

Eagles’ Keea Parish is deadly on the counter attack and she took the game by the scruff of the neck, scoring two excellently taken goals to put her team in the ascendency. Parish is proving to be a key player for the Eastcoast side, having scored a hat-trick in yesterday’s match against Ballarat FC.

Half Time: Atletico Brisbane 0-2 Eastcoast Eagles.

Brisbane came into the second half with a higher intensity. They were faster to the ball and tighter in their defence. Atletico’s number eight Tiarne Petterwood scored the first goal of the half with a disguised free kick creeping in at the front post from just outside Eastcoast’s penalty area, cutting Eagles’ lead in half.

Both Brisbane and Eastcoast’s keepers had to be at their best during the second half with many shots fired but none reaching the net. Brisbane were starting to make inroads with their attack. Petterwood’s pace was causing problems. At the other end Jessica Hogg was trying to drive on the Eastcoast side.
Eagles’ keeper Britt Hargreaves had an outstanding performance in the second half, saving a succession of powerful shots from the Brisbane side to keep her side’s lead intact.

With Brisbane pressing for an equaliser, they were hit by the sucker punch. Eastcoast’s number eleven Jessica Hayes applied the finish to seal victory for her team.

The victory places Eastcoast firmly in first place, looking to be the favourites at this stage and with Atletico playing Ballarat in the final game, they have a place in the final guaranteed. Atletico head into the final group match requiring nothing less than a victory to progress.
