The first men’s match of day two saw Newcastle Titans take on Atletico Brisbane in their second game of the tournament. The last time these sides met was at the grand-final of the Jiangmen International Futsal Tournament held in China last August, where Atletico went home with the trophy. A rollercoaster of a match saw Brisbane coast into a 3-0 half time lead, before hanging on to win 6-5 against a resurgent Newcastle side.

It was Brisbane’s Carlos Moore who set the game alight in the early stages, scoring the first two goals of the match. Moore scored two exceptionally well taken goals, showcasing the brilliant attacking player that he is.

Newcastle tried desperately to come back however they couldn’t make it past Brisbane’s in form keeper, Joshua Manwaring. Manwaring had an outstanding half, saving Brisbane from conceding in the lead up to half time.

Atletico were on fire during the first half, with the next goal scorer being Joshua Buxton. Buxton fired a striking shot past Newcastle’s keeper, leaving the score line at 3-0.

The second half took off at high tempo with Newcastle’s number six Josiah Sutherland scoring early to reduce the deficit. The New South Wales side were desperate to add some digits to the score board, and so they did with an excellent play with Canli Hakan and Tserepas working together to score an excellent team goal. Hakan crossed the ball for Tserepas, who scored a great header Brisbane were determined to keep their lead, and they restored their two goal advantage with a fine goal from number seven Ryan Jones, placing the ball firmly past Newcastle’s keeper.

With Brisbane leading still 4-2, Newcastle applied immense pressure to place some goals on the board. Sutherland and Tserepas scored two quick goals, levelling the score at 4-4, setting up a thrilling finalé.

Just seconds after conceding, Atletico were ahead again. Andres Pascoe put a ball through Newcastle’s goalkeeper’s legs. 5-4 and all to play for.

The match began to get aggressive, with Newcastle’s vice captain Canli Hakan receiving his second yellow card for the match, due to mouthing off to the ref and shoving Brisbane’s keeper Sam Godbold, resulting in him getting sent off. Hakan will now miss his team’s vital match against Ballarat with a one match suspension.

The exemplary Carlos Moore rounded off his player of the match display by clinching his hat trick. He scored with minutes to go, giving Brisbane a seemingly unassailable lead. A last second strike from Newcastle’s Scott Pettit set up some last minute drama, but Atletico held on to give them a good chance of reaching the final.
