Day two of the Escape Travel AFA Cup saw Ballarat FC take on Islanders futsal. This was a must win for both teams after they went home with losses in yesterday’s matches. Ballarat came out on top winning 5-2, leaving Islanders hoping for a minor miracle to qualify for the final.

The first half was a tough battle for both sides. Islanders former Australian international player Zoe Nichols scored the first goal of the match. She raced in on goal and produced a fine finish at full stretch.

Ballarat were looking dangerous on the counter attack and were hungry for a goal, however they couldn’t get past Islanders’ exceptional goal keeper, Deborah Lawrence, in the opening minutes.

Ballarat kept itching for a goal and it eventually came. Alyson Pym fired a dangerous ball into the penalty area, followed through with pressure on the keeper from Breanna Coombes, resulting in a goal to the Victorian side.

The final goal of the half was nothing short of sublime from Ballarat’s number four Ili Jakab, placing the ball elegantly past Islanders’ keeper.

Ballarat’s Margot Robinne scored the first goal of the second half, pulling off a cheeky back heel flick into the net.

Islanders’ number nine Caitlen Storey was the next to find the net. Storey scored an well taken goal, taking on the keeper in a one on one situation, and placing the ball coolly in the back of the net.

Robinne made yet another goal scoring contribution after making a run down the line and placing the ball past Islanders’ keeper. Tasmania was desperate for a goal by this point, being 4-2 down, however they couldn’t get past the talented Ballarat keeper Maddi Nobbs.

The final goal of the match was scored by Ballarat’s the on fire Robinne, earning herself a hat-trick.

The victory is exactly what Ballarat needed after going down in yesterday match against East Coast. Islanders now need to hope for results to go their way, to give them any chance of qualifying for the final.
