Eagles soar to victory in opener against Ballarat

Ballarat FC and Eastcoast Eagles took each other on in their first match of the Escape Travel AFA Cup. East Coast came into the first half in fine form scoring 4 goals and going into half time at 4-1. Ballarat fought back in the second half, however a couple of late goals made it 6-2 to Eagles. 

Eastcoast were keen to start the tournament with a bang, and the opening minutes couldn’t have went any better for the North New South Wales side. Four early goals froms Helen Moseley, Sophi Jones and a Keea Parish double set them on their way. Eagles’ attack was exceptional, easing past Ballarat’s defence.

Ballarat’s Margot Robinne showed her determination to start a comeback, firing a striking volley past Eastcoast’s keeper. The made the score 4-1, which it remained at the break.

The opening to the second half was very tight with both sides showing their defensive qualities. Ballarat knew the next goal was crucial and it had to be theirs. They were gifted the perfect opportunity, when the referee pointed to the spot and Mylene Deschamps made no mistake with the penalty. 

At 4-2, Ballarat were still in with a shout. However, any hope was extinguished when Eastcoast’s Parish added to her tally, earning herself a hat-trick for this evening’s game. 
Both sides kept the intensity up for the remainder of the game in what had become an end to end game. One final goal was forthcoming and it fell to Eastcoast’s Maddison Stockham, who finished well minutes before the full-time whistle. 

The victory for Eagles earns them a deserving three points, making them enter the competition on a high note. Ballarat need to step up their game to stay in the competition, or their chances of a final appearance could be over.
