Hosts Brisbane break Islanders resolve to grind out opening win

The first match of the Escape Travel AFA Cup women’s section was tight in the first half, showing both teams’ strong defensive structure. The second half saw Brisbane dominate after finally making the breakthrough. Atletico’s determination earned them a 3-0 win and the perfect start. 

The first half was tight for both teams, neither taking the ascendency in the opening stages. Atletico’s goalkeeper Keely Richards made some exceptional saves, clearly showing that she is a force to be reckoned with. Islanders kept firing shots, desperate to score the first goal, however they couldn’t find a way past the in-form Richards. 

Defences were on top for both teams, as they blocked a nice of shots on goal. Both Brisbane and Tasmania held a tight first half, showing their eagerness not to concede. 

Half Time: Atletico Brisbane 0-0 Islanders Futsal.

The second half was nail-biting, with both sides fighting for possession. It was Brisbane’s number four Jaz Kent who scored the first goal of the game, blasting home to take the lead against Islanders. Not long after Kent’s goal, Atletico’s number two Georgia Appelhof scored enabling Brisbane to sit comfortably with a two goal cushion. 

Brisbane showed dominance throughout the second half and their number eight Tiarne Petterwood scored an exceptional goal after making a run down the left wing and finishing cheekily with the outside of her foot. 

The victory sees Brisbane as a tough team to beat. The three points earns them a solid start to the tournament. Islanders now need to step up in their next game to see their chance in the final.

Magic Moment - Atletico:
Brisbane’s magic moment is their first goal. After Brisbane scored their first goal they begun to dominate the game, earning them the win. 

Magic Moment – Islanders:
Tasmania’s magic moment is their defensive structure in the first half. The match went into half time at nil all indicating a powerful defensive structure. 

POTM – Atletico:
Keely Richards showed absolute dominance throughout the whole match, letting no goals in. Her skill was evident thus earning her a deserving POTM.

POTM – Islanders:
Bethany Bygrave was the Islanders’ best performer on the day.
